Hmm.. This is probably the only way to do it if you have to convert the 2d shapes in to 3d splines.. But there is an alternative which seems more reasonable to me:
The only thing you need is to find ornament font and then you can start type in 3ds max with the text tool, and if needed to reduce the vertex numbers .. which can be done with a free plugin called Optimize spline.

Thanks! The retopo tool was what I was looking for. Too bad retopo is not available for 3D bezier curves.

I used two techniques for the different parts. The first was the retopo tool, which you can find in the Mesh panel of the edit buttons. The second was a lattice method. for which you add a lattice object to the scene and then apply a lattice modifier to the object you want to distort and set the lattice as the target object. Hope that helps!

How did you "project" the hair pattern onto the curved head surface (at 2:08 in the video)? I have been trying to find this feature, but no success. Thanks
P.S. Impressive modeling!

That is really amazing what you did with the Family crest.
I have been searching for an image of the crest but all that I find looks too generic. The one you have is the best one so far. If possible can you E-mail me the Image that you designed this off of.
